Riding bikes

During my travel to Costa Rica my girlfriend, sisters and I went to a town called Puerto Viejo where we rented bikes to get around to the nearby beaches. The road we had to take on the way was really rocky until we got to the main road that was paved. We still had to be cautious because of all the huge potholes in the paved road. It was nice just cruising on the bikes and looking at all the trees. At one point we were able to view the beach from the road, as we got closer. Finally getting to the beach we ran into the ocean and had a nice refreshing feeling that helped us cool down from the heat. When traveling all over Costa Rica a lot of the school kids would be riding their bikes through the city. I noticed sometimes there were multiple kids on the same bike. I could not imagine my bike to school everyday. They have a lot of dedication. I have a friend that does not have a car and rides his bike everywhere. I wonder how he motivates himself to ride everywhere. He must save a lot of money on gas because he does not have to buy any gas. This last January my car decided to die on me and it was not worth fixing it. I had to ride my bike to work and school for a while or walk. Finally when I got a new car, I no longer had to walk or ride my bike. I am envious of those people who have the motivation to use their bike instead of a car.

You probable figured I would comment on this post. In other countries of the world bicycling is just a great and cheap form of transportation. The government cannot really tax a bicycle to much either. In most states you don't even need a helmet or lights to ride. A decent bicycle these days are $200 brand new and what is that 2 months worth of gasoline that you will never get back? I have seen videos of places like Costa Rica and saw what you were talking about with multiple people on one bike, it makes me chuckle a little, we used to do crap like that when we were little. I liked the videos you posted, bicycle are brutal when crashed, there is a pattern in falls usually, people will go over the top of the bars, hit their shoulder (usually break the collar bone) and then slap their heard on the ground. It is hard but hilarious to watch. Your friend who does not own a bike than is amazing, I try to ride everyday but even then I still at least own a car. I can see how it would be cheap to live in that situation. I don't even drive my car but still spend over $1000 dollars a year for licences, emissions, insurance, repairs, parking etc. For $1000 dollars I could but a sweet ass bike and even have money left over to take in for a tune up if it needed it or not. The motivation is the hardest I would say. I simply like to ride a bicycle, it reminds me of how free I am and no one hassles you or tailgates you. The winters are hard, but you just need to buy the proper gear to keep warm and safe. I purchase most all things at thrift stores (except safety gear). Great blog my man, I was so anxious to reply to your wonderful post.
